Coffee can’t cure ongoing tiredness
Sadly, bad sleeping habits cannot be fixed by coffee. Just 3 days of restless sleep can render coffee completely ineffective. Which means that it is not the modern solution to modern day tiredness which most of us are suffering from. Basically, when you have multiple days of no sleep, your coffee will have absolutely no effect on your mood, on your energy or on your focus levels. This is based on a study done by the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. This news is likely to be heart-breaking for many people, as there are many of us who rely on our morning drink to wake us up.
What the research is telling us
The research was conducted on a group of 48 participants who were only allowed to sleep for 5 hours a night for 5 nights in a row. The following day they were given either a caffeine pill or they were given a placebo, before being subjected to a number of tests. Tests were designed to measure the moods of the participants and to also test their reaction time. For the first two days of the tests the caffeine had an effect but for the days thereafter the caffeine was useless in combating tiredness. By the end of the experiment, those who had caffeine reported feeling more annoyed than those who had been given the placebo.
But there is some good news
When you are getting enough sleep and not suffering from chronic tiredness, the short-term effects of caffeine can have a wonderful effect on your concentration and on your moods. But if you are struggling with a lack of sleep, it will do you much better to take a nap or get a proper night of sleep instead of grabbing for your favourite coffee and mixing a quick drink.

- Set an alarm to tell you when to go to sleep. This will help you to create and stick to a proper sleeping pattern.
- Say goodbye to the snooze button on your alarm.
- Don’t drink too much before you go to sleep.
- Make sure that your bedroom is kept dark.
- Turn off all technology at least an hour before you get into bed.
- Make sure that you have the right mattress.
- Try not to nap during the day if you know it will have an effect on your sleep later at night.
- Do some yoga, meditate or pray before you go to bed. This will help you to release the day’s stress.
- Clear your thoughts by doing some writing before you sleep. It is the best way to free your mind.
- Get some sun on your face when you wake up. This will help with sleep later on.
